Today is the 150th birthday of Dutch writer Louis Couperus (The Hague, 10 juni 1863 – De Steeg, 16 juli 1923). Of the Dutch writers of his time, he might be the one that enjoys the highest popularity today. Since 1993 he even has his own fanclub.
I missed the festivities last weekend because I had to work, so I thought I’d celebrate by making a nice set of some of the most beautiful covers of his books.
I could not find all of the artists who made them, but here are the ones I did find:
By Jan Toorop (1885-1928):
God en Goden (1903)
By Theo Neuhuys (1878 – 1921)
Boeken der Kleine zielen (1901)
By H.P. Berlage (1897–1909)
Extaze (‘Werken’ series) (1905)
Hooge troeven (1896)
By L.W.R. Wenckebach (1860-1937)
Eline Vere (1898)
By J.G. van Caspel (1870-1928)
Langs Lijnen van geleidelijkheid
By Chris Lebeau (1878-1945)
De stille Kracht (1900)
Van oude menschen, de dingen die voorbijgaan (1906)
By Jules de Praetere
Over lichtende drempels (1912)
I’ll edit and add more names if and when I learn more names.
